A medical graduate from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Dr. Mjaanes completed his residency at Rush Medical Center in Chicago. During his training he was awarded the prestigious Aesculapius Award for his work in patient care and resident teaching. Dr. Mjaanes went on to complete a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He is Board Certified in Pediatrics and CAQ-certified in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Mjaanes is dedicated to caring for young athletes. At the high school level, he gives talks to parents, coaches and student athletes on a variety of current sports issues and injury prevention. As part of his sports medicine practice, Dr. Mjaanes serves as Head Team Physician for two Chicago high schools, North Lawndale College Prep and Simeon Career Academy. He also serves as consulting team physician for New Trier Township High School (Wilmette) and Crane High School in Chicago.
At the collegiate level, Dr. Mjaanes serves as Head Team Physician for Trinity International University and is Medical Director of their Athletic Training Program. He also cares for student athletes at DePaul University's training room and on the sidelines at home basketball and soccer games. A soccer enthusiast, Dr. Mjaanes is one of the team physicians for US Soccer and travels abroad with the national teams. In addition, Dr. Mjaanes has spent years helping cover Special Olympics, the Chicago Marathon and other local sports and fitness events.
As an assistant professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University, Dr. Mjaanes takes an active role in educating future physicians and advancing research in sports medicine. He is one of the primary faculty in our Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program at Rush. He has presented at numerous sports medicine conferences in the Chicago area, as well as on the national and international stage. He currently serves as co-chair of the Sports Medicine and Fitness Committee of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and sits on the Educational Committee for The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Dr Mjaanes continues to perform research in various areas in sports medicine. Past, present and pending research projects include: shoulder injuries in volleyball players, anterior knee pain in children, strength training in adolescents and young adults, use of anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing substances, concussions in contact sports and martial arts, and throwing injuries in young overhead athletes.
