Chicago Bulls head team physicians Dr. Brian Cole and Dr. Kathy Weber of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush are traveling with the Chicago Bulls throughout the NBA playoff series games. The MOR sports medicine physicians will blog about their experiences traveling with the team and working with the Bulls' players in order to keep them playing at the best of their abilities.

High Energy at Tonight's Game

Sunday, May 15 - Tonight was a great game. The team kept their focus through a tight first half, but in the second half the Bulls' defense simply outplayed the Heat. Luol and Derrick had amazing games, and Noah was back to the aggressive defense that we've grown to expect from him, but it was Taj's dunk on Dwayne Wade that ignited the UC. The energy tonight was the highest I've seen in seven seasons with the team.

We now prepare for game 2 on Wednesday. It was an important win but all agree that it's the first of the series. We're glad to go into game 2 with a very healthy team.

GO RED!

Hoping to Be Done Until Sunday

Thursday, May 12 - Up 17. Section 114 is like a winning craps table! Kathy and I are making lots of friends! Hoping to be done 'til Sunday.

Ready To Leave Atlanta in the Dust

Thursday, May 12 - The training room is buzzing with pre-game anticipation. Bogans is requesting a birthday "W". The team is ready!

Brian and I have enjoyed the Southern hospitality and our time here in Atlanta, but we are ready to leave this town in the dust.

LET'S GO BULLS!

Playing at the Top of their Game

Tuesday, May 10 - Tonight was a great night for the Chicago Bulls. Game 5 was a very important win, and we couldn't be more happy with the way the team played. The players are healthy and playing at the top of their game. This season we've seen such chemistry among the players, really rallying behind their teammates in clutch situations. The bench squad came out strong, and the team's defense as a whole was back to a level that got them known as one of the league's top defensive teams. Tonight's game was definitely the morale boost we needed to travel to Atlanta on Thursday for game 6.

More to come from Atlanta as we hope for a Bulls' win to end the series!

Back to Chicago

Sunday, May 8 - It was a disappointing game 4. Like all Chicago fans, we were hoping for a win, but the team is ready to get home and make the necessary improvements to face the Hawks again in game 5.

Four days in Atlanta...well it is a little long especially when Kathy and I are accustomed to being in the office or operating room for most of each day. It was nice, however, to spend quality time with some of the Bulls Admin and a few of the players, as that too is a real privilege of our job. The players seem to really watch out for one another and there is a true family atmosphere throughout the entire organization. Immediately after the game Kathy and I boarded the Bulls plane with the team and headed back to Chicago. We arrived at 1:30 am, and quickly got home to our families in order to catch a few hours of sleep before our busy clinic schedule tomorrow morning. The next few days in Chicago will help us both to catch up with our practices.

More to come when the Bulls take on the Hawks at the UC on Tuesday. Thanks for following and Go RED!

Getting Ready for Game Three

Friday, May 6 - Pre-game in the training room. The players are focused and determined.

Trainers stretching, taping, and putting the final touches in preparation for what we all hope is a victory.

Traveling to Atlanta

Thursday, May 5 - Well, about to take off for Game 3 in Atlanta. Here is a quick shot of the Bull's plane. Truly a privilege to travel with them to Atlanta. Fortunately, not a lot of medical stuff to do, so it gives Kathy and I a chance to work out and catch up on research and our laundry list of "to dos."

So the flight is only 1 hour 26 minutes. Wishing I never had to fly commercial again!

Traveling to Atlanta

Thursday, May 5 - In the airport lounge helping Scottie with his sore knee. One of the very special aspects of this job is getting to share quality time with the great "veterans" of the NBA. I will always cherish these moments.

Hope to get this done in three more...but that's why they play the games!

Winning at Home

Wednesday, April 27 - Well, winning at home for game 5 was a thrill for all of us. Derrick Rose was just fantastic to work with after his ankle sprain that occurred during game 4. Kathy and I are always learning about how to help players deal with injury and return to play. After sustaining a fairly significant inversion ankle sprain in game 4, all of us were quite concerned about how quickly his pain would go away to allow him to play uninhibited. The MRI was particularly helpful in educating all of us and reinforcing the fact that this type of ankle sprain was safe to play on, and provided Derrick the reassurance that he could safely and confidently push through the discomfort. He did just that!

We have five full days of rest and then some until round 2! This is particularly exciting since we haven't gone to round 2 since we played in 2007 against Detroit after beating Miami. More soon...

Go Red!

Listen to Dr. Cole's half-time interview about Derrick Rose's injury. Dr. Cole also provides an overview of ankle sprain evaluation and treatment.

Pre-Sweep Warmup

Saturday, April 23 - Pre-sweep warmup we hope. All good here. Guys are healthy and focused. Hoping to come home with a win and a "week off."

Today is the Calm After a Small Storm

Friday, April 22 - Last night after the game, many of us got together at the hotel lounge to re-hash the game and spend some down time together. Unlike some of the prior playoff series, many of the players sat together having dinner as one larger group. My recollection is that they often separated into smaller groups in prior years. This is notable and is another example of how I think this team works so well together. It might have a lot to do with Tom (the head coach) and the environment that he has fostered. These guys truly seem to watch out for each other and it is touching to see.

Fortunately, no calls for medical help today (other than from non-Bulls people), and it is a great day to catch up on research, exercise and outstanding neglected work. Customarily, Kathy and I like to take the trainers out for dinner and that is what we will likely do this evening. Notably, we at Midwest Orthopaedics continue to feel privileged to be involved with such a great organization and are grateful to our partners for helping us along the way in keeping them healthy.

Best to all and Go RED!

Clearly more Bulls fans than Pacer fans!

Another Tough Game

Friday, April 22 - All healthy but very physical. A few bruises and scratches but everyone is healthy. Felt like being in Chicago... lots of Bulls fans really makes a difference. Tonight they rest for a quick turn around on Saturday. More soon from Indy!

Surprise Visit to the Bulls Locker Room

Thursday, April 21 - We were surprised to find the Butler Bulldog made a visit to the Bulls locker room. He was on hand to cheer the Bulls on to victory. In retrospect, this may have been a miscalculation on the hometown mascot. The team is feeling really good!

Cheer on the Bulls in Indiana

Thursday, April 21 - Kathy and I are particularly excited this year for the playoffs. After seven seasons we are as optimistic as ever. The best part about it is we are entering the first round with everyone healthy. As you might expect, we both would prefer to just watch the game and never be called upon for player injuries.

The nice thing about playing Indiana first is that we are so close and can still treat our patients yet travel easily to the games. We are off today for tonight's game and will return on Saturday pm with the team. It is always strange being a team doc at the away games... everyone seems to be cheering at the wrong time! We hope for lots of Bulls fans to be there.

Red Hot Weather for the Bulls Tonight

Thursday, April 21 - After a busy morning in the Midwest Orthopaedic at Rush sports medicine clinic, Dr. Cole and I head to Indy to join the team for tonight's game. The weather is anticipated to be "red hot" for the Bulls tonight. We will keep you posted on how things are progressing in the Hoosier state.
