Charles A. Bush-Joseph, M.D.
Sports Medicine, Knee, Shoulder & Hip
Professor, Rush University Medical Center
Although Dr. Bush-Joseph is regarded as a sports medicine and arthroscopic surgical specialist, most of his patients know him by his warm, compassionate bedside manner.
A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in 1983, he is currently a Professor at Rush University Medical Center and the Associate Director of the Rush Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Bush-Joseph is a respected educator of medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing orthopaedic surgeons lecturing at numerous national educational meetings. He serves on the editorial board of several national orthopaedic journals (including the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine) and holds committee responsibilities with several national orthopaedic societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedics Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Since 2005, Dr. Bush-Joseph has been a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine Examination Committee formulating the board exam for orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians.
Long involved in the care of high school, collegiate, and recreational athletes, Dr. Bush-Joseph is the head team physician for the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball Club and Associate Team Physician for the Chicago Bulls. Through his experience with high profile professional athletes, Dr. Bush-Joseph was elected to the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Board. This exclusive group of team physicians advises the Major League Baseball Commissioner on medical policy and emerging trends in training and the medical care of the elite athlete.
While Dr. Bush-Joseph is involved with all of the above activities, he still most enjoys the care of the injured athlete and patient. He maintains a busy clinical practice performing over 400 surgeries annually including over 100 knee ligament (ACL and knee dislocation) surgeries, many referred by other Chicagoland orthopaedic and sports medicine physicians. Dr. Bush-Joseph is among the busiest hip arthroscopic surgeons in Illinois with experience in emerging techniques of hip joint preservation.
Although Dr. Bush-Joseph has undergone ACL reconstructions on both knees, he remains active in basketball, skiing, and golf. He always finds time to watch his children participate in a variety of high school and junior high sports including rowing, gymnastics, football, soccer, and lacrosse. His wife Vicky is a retired adoption attorney who continues to teach at the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.
