MRI General Preparation
MRI

Typically, patients require no preparation or dietary restrictions. Take any medication you usually take, unless you are instructed otherwise. However, certain conditions may prevent you from having an MRI examination. When scheduling your appointment, and just prior to the test, please alert our staff and technologist if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Pacemaker
  • Pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia
  • Neurostimulators (TENS-unit)
  • Implanted drug infusion device (i.e., insulin pump)
  • Exposure of metal fragments to your eye
  • Permanent eyeliner
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Surgical staples or clips within the brain
  • Cachlear implants
  • Metallic implants
  • Dental bridges
  • Inferior vena cava umbrella
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Hearing aid
  • History as a metal worker
  • Shrapnel or bullet wounds
  • Dorsal column stimulators
  • Allergy to iodine, shellfish or gadolinium
  • Other conditions you believe to be relevant

You will be asked if you have had brain, ear, eye or other surgeries.

Gadolinium

Depending on the circumstances of your scan, your doctor may choose that you receive Gadolinium. Gadolinium is a contrast agent that provides greater distinction between normal tissue and abnormal tissue in the body, making it easier for your doctor to review your scan. Gadolinium requires no special preparation before your exam.

Before Your Exam

To help to ensure the best scan result and to make sure you are comfortable during your exam, gowns will be provided.

During Your Exam

Patients lie comfortably on a scanning bed, which is open on all four sides. A family member or friend may accompany you. Our expert staff is available throughout the procedure to answer questions and assist you. In the magnet room, a technologist will assist you on to the padded table.

The table will move. You will hear sounds similar to a drumbeat as pictures of your body are formed. At all times during the exam a technologist will be able to see and hear you. Music will be available for your convenience. Please feel free to bring your personal CD's with you to the center.

After Your Exam

You may resume your normal activities immediately after the exam unless instructed otherwise by a physician. Board-certified radiologists will report the results of your MRI examination directly to your Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physician.
