Dr. Gunnar Andersson was Awarded the Arthritis Foundation Freedom of Movement Award
Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physician, Dr. Gunnar Andersson, MD, PhD, Professor, Chairman Emeritus and The Ronald L. DeWald, MD, Chair in Spinal Deformities at Rush University Medical Center was recently named recipient of the 2010 Freedom of Movement Award by the Arthritis Foundation, Greater Chicago Chapter.
The award recognizes Dr. Andersson for his more than 30-year career in spine surgery research and education. Dr. Andersson has authored and coauthored more than 250 academic papers and over 150 books and book chapters relating to back injuries and pain. He spent most of his formative years as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Sahlgren Hospital, the University of Goteborg, Sweden, and is credited with designing the seat in Volvo automobiles. Dr. Andersson moved to Chicago in 1985, and is currently a partner at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. Dr. Andersson's continued research and focus on education has made him one of the most innovative surgeons in his field.
The award was presented at the Arthritis Foundation's Annual Black Tie Gala on Saturday, October 16, at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago. The evening included live and silent auctions, dinner, and award presentation followed by live jazz music by Canadian Jazz Musician, Chantal Chamberland.
Funds raised for the gala will be used to help create a brighter future for the millions of Americans living each day with the pain of arthritis through research, advocacy efforts, and programs and services at both local and national levels.
