Despite the discomfort they may cause, high heels have become increasingly popular in women's fashion. The growing trend can contribute to conditions such as hammer toe or bunions. However, rather than fix the problem by wearing a more sensible shoe, many women are turning to surgical procedures to accommodate a more fashionable shoe.
"They are requesting the removal of bone which essentially would turn the little toe into a little nub that sticks out of the side of their foot." said foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Simon Lee. The procedures are called toe bone shortening or toe slimming in which the bone is shaved down to decrease the size of the toe. The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS) warns that without pain "cosmetic foot surgery should not be considered in any circumstances and the Society does not condone its practice."
