Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush hand, wrist and elbow specialists Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. John Fernandez were recently featured in Becker's Orthopaedic & Spine Review as the 45 Great Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeons to Know. The list includes 45 hand and upper extremity surgeons nationwide. Their selection to the list was based on awards they received from accredited organizations, leadership in those organizations, work on professional publications, and positions of service at hospitals and surgery centers.
Since 1993, Dr. Mark Cohen has served as the director of the section of hand and elbow surgery at Rush University Medical Center. He attended Harvard Medical School, graduating magna cum laude with honors in a special field. After finishing a residency program at University of California, San Diego, he completed a hand, upper extremity and microvascular surgery fellowship at the Indiana Hand Center, one of the largest and most prestigious hand centers in the country. Dr. Cohen has gone on to author more than 80 medical articles, 30 book chapters, and he has written a textbook on hand and wrist injuries. Dr. Cohen has won several research, teaching and achievement awards and is a member of 16 national and international medical societies and associations.
Dr. John Fernandez graduated magna cum laude from the University of Akron Ohio and salutatorian from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. He served his residency and internship at the University of Pittsburg Medical Center and then completed a fellowship in hand and microvasular surgery at the renowned Indiana Hand Center. Dr. Fernandez serves with Dr. Cohen as a consultant for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox, performing hand surgeries for many of their high performance athletes.
