Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush sports medicine physician Dr. Shane Nho was featured on ABC 36 News discussing treatment of hip impingement among young athletes. Dr. Nho described the condition as, "very subtle bony abnormalities, either on the ball side or the socket side, and these things start to rub up against each other. That's when you start to develop this impingement-type pain and this intimately leads to labral tears." These bony abnormalities on the surface of the ball and socket are not uncommon, however the stress put on an athletic hip causes the injury process to speed up.
Often times a surgery can end an athlete's career; however Dr. Nho performs an arthroscopic technique that has had more favorable outcomes. Dr. Nho stated, "78% of them were able to return to play, and over 90% were able to return back to the same level of competition that they had been previously."
