Dr. Jacobs Discusses Metal on Metal Hip Replacements

The recent FDA recall of one type of Metal on Metal hip replacement leaves many questioning their own hip replacement procedure. Dr. Joshua Jacobs, hip and knee reconstruction and replacement specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush was featured on NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams to discuss metal on metal hip replacements and why they sometimes fail.

Dr. Jacobs explained that a very small, finite amount of debris can be caused by everyday wear of all implants, however in some Metal on Metal implants the debris released can be excessive and cause a local tissue response that can lead to pain, loosening and sometimes even lead to bone loss.
