Dr. Mjaanes Offers Tips To Start Exercise Routine
Many New Year's resolutions of 2011 consist of weight loss and increased exercise, but what's the secret to keeping the resolution? Dr. Jeffrey Mjaanes, sports medicine specialist at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, was recently featured in the Chicago Tribune Magazine discussing ways to start and maintain a healthy workout regimen. Dr. Mjaanes says, "The key is just a slow start."
Dr. Mjaanes offered these tips to starting an exercise routine:
- Get the go-head from your primary-care physician.
- Know that you're "awesome" for starting to exercise.
- Begin gradually: walking, then speed walking, trotting, jogging, running.
- Don't increase intensity or distance by more than 10 percent weekly.
