MOR Surgeons Operate on White Sox' Ozuna

On Memorial Day, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush surgeons performed surgery on White Sox utility man Pablo Ozuna to repair a fractured right fibula and torn right deltoid and syndesmotic ligament. The procedure was performed by Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph, Dr. Nikhil Verma, and Dr. Simon Lee at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Ozuna suffered the injury while running the bases during the June 27 game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Legging out a double to lead off the bottom of the first, Ozuna caught his spike awkwardly rounding first base. Ozuna was on the ground for a few minutes near the base, but then walked off the field on his own power after talking to the trainer. Unfortunately, the injury was more severe than originally thought.

The procedure involved fixing the injury with a plate and three screws. The injuries will be non-weight bearing for six to eight weeks, and Ozuna should be able to begin rehabilitation in a non-weight bearing environment (pool) in three weeks. He is expected to be out of action for three months.

Dr. Bush-Joseph is head team physician of the Chicago White Sox. Dr. Verma is a Sports Medicine surgeon who also works with the White Sox. Dr. Lee is an orthopaedic Foot and Ankle specialist.
