Four Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physicians are currently featured in Rush Stories, an online documentary promoting the life changing procedures offered at Rush University Medical Center. Drs. Cohen, Fernandez, Gitelis, and Virkus are highlighted for their innovative approaches to treating complex musculoskeletal injuries and conditions.
Drs. Cohen, Fernandez, and Virkus led the team who treated Ki Shih. Ki was only 19 years old when she was struck by a bus while riding her bike. Suffering several severe injuries, an amputation procedure seemed imminent. The Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush physicians were called on to save Ki's leg.
With fracture injuries to her foot, ankle, and pelvis, it was doubtful that Ki would ever walk again. The physicians of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush used their unique experience and a revolutionary procedure to save Ki's leg and give her the chance to live a healthy normal life. Ki is now not only walking, but also running after her son.
A Rush Story is also devoted to Dr. Steven Gitelis' efforts to treat Dustin, a 7 year old fighting bone cancer. By the time Dustin came to the Rush University Medical Center, he had already been through numerous rounds of chemotherapy and was scheduled to have an operation to amputate his leg. Dustin's family, looking for another option to save the boy's leg, turned to Rush.
Dr. Gitelis recommended the repiphysis implant procedure to Dustin and his family. This procedure consisted of removing the diseased bone and replacing it with a revolutionary new implant. The repiphysis implant then acts as an actual human bone and grows along with the child as they mature. This innovative option also helps to eliminate the long-term concern of future operations. Through implanting the repiphysis, Dustin now leads the life of a normal child.
