Dr. Gunnar Andersson has long been a supporter of the Swedish American community in the Chicagoland area, acting as a co-chair for the board of trustees of the Swedish American Museum located on the north side of Chicago. On Saturday, October 22nd Dr. Andersson was recognized not only for his support of the organization, but also for his contributions in the field of spine care and research.
Dr. Andersson permanently moved to Chicago and joined the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush practice in 1985, after spending much of his formative years as an orthopaedic surgeon at Sahlgren Hospital, the University of Goteborg, Sweden. He has authored and co-authored more than 250 academic papers and over 150 books and book chapters mostly related to back pain and back injuries. Dr. Andersson has been at the forefront of spine surgery research and education for more than 30 years. In addition to being honored by the museum for his research, Dr. Anderson received the 2010 Freedom of Movement Award from the Arthritis Foundation and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for the Study of Lumbar Spine.
Dr. Andersson has worked to grow the Orthopedic Department at Rush University Medical Center and the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush practice to the program it is today, nationally recognized as the top orthopedic program in Illinois and 8th in the nation according to U.S.News & World Report rankings. Dr. Andersson has long been a respected colleague and mentor to his associates. The physicians and staff of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush congratulate Dr. Andersson on this great honor.
