Walter Virkus, M.D. has recently expanded his practice coverage into the western suburbs. As of January 3, 2012, he will be seeing patients in the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush location at Prairie Medical Center, 2450 Wolf Rd, Westchester, IL. He brings a unique practice focus being fellowship trained in both orthopedic trauma and oncology. Westchester will be the farthest west that orthopedic oncology care has ever been available in the Chicagoland area.
Dr. Virkus received his medical degree from the New Jersey Medical School, followed by an orthopedic residency at the University of Maryland. He then went on to complete dual fellowships in orthopedic trauma at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He then completed an additional fellowship in orthopedic oncology at the University of Florida, Gainesville.
His practice interests include treatment of complicated orthopedic conditions including benign and malignant tumors of soft tissue and bone such as osteosarcoma, non-healing fractures, pelvis and acetabulum fractures, infections and bone deformities. Dr. Virkus' more than 10 years' experience treating these complicated conditions, gives him extensive expertise in the area.

As a member of the MOR Limb Preservation Center, Dr. Virkus is also skilled in advanced surgical reconstructive techniques. He has authored multiple book chapters and research articles on both trauma and oncology, and regularly teaches courses in advanced fracture care techniques to orthopedic residents and attending surgeons.
