Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Virkus graduated cum laude from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. After graduating from the New Jersey Medical School, he did his orthopaedic residency at the University of Maryland. He then completed orthopaedic trauma fellowships at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. This was followed by a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Dr. Virkus has a very unique practice specializing in both orthopaedic trauma and oncology. The majority of his practice is at Rush, but he also treats trauma and cancer patients at Cook County Hospital. His clinical interests are in complex limb preservation, pelvis and acetabulum surgery, and minimally invasive fracture surgery. He has authored multiple book chapters and research articles on both trauma and oncology.

Dr. Virkus provides Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush patients with highly specialized orthopaedic oncology care. His current clinical appointments include Associate Attending Physician, Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and Senior Attending Physician, Orthopaedics, Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He is also residency director of the prestigious Rush Orthopaedic residency program.
