Chicago Magazine’s ‘Top Docs for Fitness Junkies’

As we strive to take excellent care of our patients, including those that are involved in sports and fitness, we are proud to see so many of our physicians included in this just-released list in Chicago Magazine’s October 2020 issue. Thank you to our physician peers for the many votes of confidence.

The list included these specialists:

Dr. Bernard Bach

Dr. Bernard Bach was one of the first sports medicine orthopedic surgeons in Chicago. In 1986, he pioneered the sports medicine program for Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR), which today is one of the nation's most well-respected programs. Dr. Bach is a knee and shoulder orthopedic surgeon. He held the position of Director for the Division of Sports Medicine for 30 years and was the Sports Medicine Fellowship Director for 28 years at Rush University Medical Center. He is also team physician for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls. 

Dr. Chuck Bush-Joseph

A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School in 1983, he is currently a Professor at Rush University Medical Center and the Associate Director of the Rush Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Bush-Joseph is a respected educator of medical students, residents, fellows, and practicing orthopedic surgeons lecturing at numerous national educational meetings. He serves on the editorial board of several national orthopedic journals, including the prestigious American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Mark Cohen

Dr. Cohen was again selected one of Chicago's "Top Doctors" in Hand and Orthopaedic Surgery by Chicago Magazine in 2020. He was previously honored in this fashion in 1997, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, every year the "Top Doctors" edition has been published. U.S.News & World Report rates him in the top 1% of physicians in his specialty in the nation. Dr. Cohen was recently named the 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Clinical Service award by Rush University, which recognizes faculty who demonstrate continuous excellence in clinical care, leadership and scholarship. 

Dr. Christopher DeWald

A board certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Chris DeWald is a member of several professional organizations. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on advanced techniques in spinal surgery. Living and studying abroad has given Dr. DeWald a progressive perspective of this surgical specialty. Moreover, he is admired by his patients for his sensitivity to their needs. 

Dr. Edward Goldberg

Dr. Goldberg concentrates his practice at Rush University Medical Center on the treatment of spinal injuries and diseases of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and uses the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques to treat patients. He has been an attending spine surgeon at Rush University Medical Center for 29 years. Dr. Goldberg is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush. 

Dr. George Holmes

In 2013, Dr. George B. Holmes, Jr. was appointed Associate Professor, Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He has been the Director of the Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Section at Rush since 1992 and is also the Foot & Ankle Fellowship Director at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush. Dr. Holmes has also been on the Editorial Board of Foot & Ankle International since 1989 and has spoken before numerous local, national and international audiences.

Dr. Joshua Jacobs

Dr. Jacobs concentrates his practice on total hip and total knee replacement surgery at Rush University Medical Center, where he serves as chairperson of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush Medical College. Dr. Jacobs is especially interested in the materials used for prosthetic devices and has conducted research and published extensively on this topic. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is the recipient of several awards for his work in research. 

Dr. Nik Verma

Dr. Verma specializes in treatment of the shoulder, elbow and knee with an emphasis on advanced arthroscopic reconstructive techniques of the shoulder, shoulder replacement, knee ligament reconstruction and articular cartilage reconstruction and meniscal transplantation. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Verma completed his orthopedic residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in sports medicine and shoulder surgery. While in New York, he served as an assistant team physician for the St. John's University Athletic Department. He also received specialized training in treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders in the overhead throwing athlete. 

Dr. Adam Yanke

Dr. Adam B. Yanke is a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with an interest in advanced arthroscopy, shoulder replacement, and a special focus on patellofemoral dysfunction and cartilage restoration. Dr. Yanke earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University, Oxford, OH, with majors in engineering physics and zoology and a minor in non-linear mathematics. After obtaining his medical degree from Rush Medical College (Chicago, IL), Dr. Yanke continued on at Rush for his Orthopedic Surgery residency. He followed this by attending the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rush University, where he was trained in advanced joint arthroscopy, shoulder arthroplasty, and cartilage restoration techniques.
