Renowned orthopedic surgeon, Anthony Romeo, M.D., attended the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was inducted as President of the society. Dr. Romeo is an orthopedic surgeon at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center, and director of the Section of Shoulder & Elbow. He also serves as co- team physician for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls.

Dr. Romeo told Orthopedics This Week, “I am honored to be entrusted with the stewardship of this organization. I will do my utmost to continue to foster the respect and prestige of this Society.”

Commenting on his plans, Dr. Romeo noted, “We have expanded the membership to include a new category of ‘Candidate Member.’ This will allow younger members of our profession to get involved in the organization at an earlier time in their careers, providing vitality to the entire organization.”

“I want to ensure that young surgeons in the ASES understand that we are genuinely interested in their ideas, and that we want to create opportunities for them to share those ideas. They should not have to wait five-ten years to get on the podium or contribute with other substantial efforts to the society. They should feel welcomed and encouraged by senior level surgeons to actively participate in our organization.”

The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons society has the opportunity to offer greater in-depth scholarly pursuits regarding all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery, with special efforts towards complex and reconstructive procedures. This includes, for example, anatomic and reverse shoulder arthroscopy, with most of the work done to date in North America emanating from the members of ASES.   In addition, new initiatives in Education, Research, and Political Advocacy will keep the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons as the preeminent organization for Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and all health care providers of shoulder and elbow care throughout the world.

As co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Bulls, and requested consultant for many top athletes, Dr. Romeo is connected to his local and regional community. In addition, he works with his generous patients to develop philanthropic efforts to fund advanced research to develop improved methods to treat shoulder and elbow problems and provide the opportunity for improved quality of life even into our senior years. He is also keenly aware of the world beyond the U.S. He stated, “During my tenure as President I want to create even more international collaboration between shoulder and elbow surgeons. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to work with numerous talented surgeons from around the world.m"

"I want my Presidency to have a strong international flavor, so my message is: Shoulder and elbow innovation comes from all corners of the globe, so in our effort to be the best, we welcome and celebrate the knowledge and expertise gained by a worldwide perspective.”
