Each year an estimated 38,000 people need custom fit spinal implant rods to correct spinal deformities, according to a recent Rush University Medical Center article. Traditionally, surgeons adjust the metal rods to fit each patient during surgery, as a result adding time to the surgical procedure.
Dr. Matthew Colman, a Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush spine surgeon and musculoskeletal oncology specialist, has begun using patient-specific rods. The patient-specific rods are customized before surgery so less time is needed during the operation.
Dr. Colman was one of the first doctors in Chicago, IL to use these patient-specific rods. Read the full Rush University Medical Center article.
