Hip Pain and Treatment Options

For many patients, hip pain comes as a surprise. Sometimes, it even comes and goes. At first, it's tolerable, but eventually, it gets worse and begins to slow them down. Some can no longer walk the dog or join children or grandchildren at the park while others have to give up running or other athletic pursuits. Many have difficulty sleeping.

The hip specialists at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush hear this every day from patients of all ages: pain compromising busy, active lives.

This team of highly-trained, experienced surgeons offers relief to patients with hip pain by providing a holistic approach; a full range of treatment solutions, starting with therapy and medication, as well as a variety of surgical options. Afterwards, patients thank them for giving them their lives back.

Located on the campus of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush hip specialist team consists of physicians, physicians' assistants and nurses who specialize in managing hip problems and performing hip procedures. Treating hip pain is what they do every day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 300,000 hip replacements are performed each year. Here in the Chicago area, the physicians at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush perform more hip and knee procedures than any other group. They are also among the few performing hip arthroscopy. In recognition of their expertise, Blue Cross Blue Shield has designated Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement. And, many hip and knee replacement specialists from across the country have been trained at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush.

The surgeons and scientists at Rush are national and international leaders in the field of orthopedic research. The collaborative nature of their studies brings innovations from the lab to a patient's bedside. Rush orthopedic surgeons publish more orthopedic research, and receive more awards, than any other institution in the Chicago area.

When a patient with hip pain visits a physician on the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush hip multi-specialty team, they typically begin by reviewing non-surgical options. This may include the use of walking aids and physical therapy as well as anti-inflammatory medications, pain relievers and cortisone injections.

If non-surgical methods don't relieve the pain or get the patient back to the desired functional level, surgical procedure options are discussed. Most often, they include hip arthroscopy and hip replacement (arthroplasty).

To help understand some of these procedures, it helps to understand the origins of the medical terms. Arthro means "joint." Plasty means "molding or forming." Scopy means "to look at." Arthroscopy involves the insertion of a "telescope" into the joint which is attached to a camera that helps the surgeon look inside the joint. Arthroplasty is actually a replacement of the native (damaged) joint surfaces with man-made materials in the form of an implanted prosthesis.

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush is staffed with some of the country's best hip physicians. They include:

Together, the Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush team helps patients get past disabling hip pain. Thanks to the team's expertise, patients can get back to work, back to play and back to living a pain-free life.
