Helping Those in Need, 13 Years in a Row

December 5, 2019

For the 13th year in a row, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR) foot and ankle surgeons, medical residents and students at Rush University Medical Center provided foot care, boots and socks to homeless men and women at the Franciscan House of Mary & Joseph, an overnight shelter on Chicago’s west side.

Dr. Simon Lee, a MOR foot and ankle surgeon, began the Chicago chapter of the national ‘Our Hearts to Your Soles’ program in 2007 and since then, has been joined by his partners Drs. Johnny Lin and Kamran Hamid. This year’s event was organized by Dr. Hamid. The mission of “Our Hearts to Your Soles” is to provide the less fortunate people across the United States with shoes and free foot examinations.

Extreme weather conditions leave Chicago’s homeless population in need of medical attention and treatment. A recent study reports that only 26% of homeless individuals report ever having a foot examination by a medical provider.
