Sports medicine orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Adam Yanke, was recently awarded the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Research Grant. The grant was awarded for Dr. Yanke’s project titled “Sequential Sectioning of the Bundles of the Medial Patellofemoral Ligament.”
Dislocation injuries of the patella represent a common orthopaedic problem in the young athletic population with a reported incidence of 2.29 per 100,000 person-years in the United States. The majority of these events (51.9%) occur during athletic activity and result in injury to the patellar area of the knee. The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is mostly responsible for preventing the knee cap from dislocating.
At each end of the MPFL, there are two distinct sets of fibers that assist in keeping the knee cap in place. The purpose of the study being led by Dr. Yanke is to further research these fibers to better determine their role during knee flexion. Ultimately, the goal is to help guide surgeons to determine the most effective patellar fixation site when performing an MPFL reconstruction to prevent future dislocations from happening.
Dr. Adam Yanke is a sports medicine orthopedic surgeon with an interest in advanced arthroscopy, shoulder replacement, and a special focus on patellofemoral dysfunction and cartilage restoration. Throughout his orthopedic training, Dr. Yanke completed a Ph.D. in the department of Biochemistry. Through a collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry, Dr. Yanke continues to perform both basic science and clinical research in an effort to develop bench-top techniques that will translate directly to improved patient care. Dr. Yanke is the head team doctor for the Windy City Bulls. He is also a team doctor for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox and Chicago Fire Soccer Club.
