Kern Singh, MD, Co-Director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, has officially founded the Minimally Invasive Spine Study Group (MISSG). The MISSG is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to promote research and advancement in the field of minimally invasive spine surgery. MISSG is a collaborative, multi-institution organization that is focused on performing high-quality clinical research. MISSG houses an online patient registry called REDCAP, which currently contains data from 3,000 unique patients treated via minimally-invasive approaches. Organization members have the ability to add patients to the registry through an online portal. The data for each patient ranges from preoperative demographics, operative characteristics and many spine specific measures that can be utilized for healthcare outcomes and risk-related research.

“The MISSG is an international organization dedicated to advancement of minimally invasive spine surgery that is truly the first of its kind. This collaborative effort between the world’s leading minimally invasive spine surgeons will revolutionize the way in which we conduct minimally invasive spine research,” said Dr. Singh.

Dr. Singh is joined on the board of directors by Frank Phillips, MD and Sheeraz Qureshi, MD. Dr. Phillips, Co-Director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, will serve in the capacity of Secretary. Dr. Qureshi, Associate Professor of Spinal Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, will serve as the Treasurer.

MISSG is a collaborative research registry which provides world-leading spine surgeons important resources to help advance minimally invasive spine care in the United States and internationally. An informational session will be held at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery (ISASS) in mid-April in Boca Raton Florida.
