Losing height is one of the most universal parts of aging, and most of the time it is nothing to worry about. Sometimes, though, it is your spine telling you something important.
Nathan J. Your discs lose water, and it adds up
Dr. Lee describes the discs between your vertebrae as the shock absorbers of the spine. As we age, those discs gradually lose water content and become thinner.
"Since we have discs throughout the spine, even a small amount of height loss at multiple levels can add up over time," Dr. Lee explained in the article. "This is one of the more normal reasons we become a little shorter with age."
Because there are more than 20 discs stacked from your neck to your low back, a millimeter here and a millimeter there eventually becomes a noticeable difference on the exam room measuring rod.
Compression fractures can happen quietly
Height loss becomes more meaningful when weakened bone is involved. Osteoporosis and osteopenia leave the vertebrae vulnerable to compression or fracture, and Dr. Lee notes that these fractures do not always announce themselves.
"Sometimes these fractures occur without a major injury and may even go unnoticed," Dr. Lee said. "Multiple compression fractures can lead to substantial loss of height and a more rounded or kyphotic posture."
That combination of shrinking height and a forward rounding of the upper back is one of the more visible signs that bone health deserves attention.
Arthritis and spinal deformity change your alignment
Age-related degeneration does more than thin the discs. It can also change the shape and alignment of the spine itself. Dr. Lee points to adult spinal deformity, including degenerative scoliosis and increasing forward curvature, as another reason patients find themselves standing shorter than they used to.

When height loss is a reason to see a spine specialist
Gradual, slow loss of height is usually normal. New symptoms alongside it are not.
"New pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs along with height loss or worsening posture also deserves medical attention," Dr. Lee said, "as these symptoms can sometimes indicate spinal stenosis, nerve compression, or other degenerative changes in the spine."
A sudden change in height or posture, back pain that will not resolve, or a fracture after a minor fall are all worth raising with a physician.
What you can do to prevent height loss
Dr. Lee is direct about the limits. Height lost to normal disc aging cannot be restored, and height lost to a vertebral compression fracture is not something you can exercise your way back into. But he is equally clear that a great deal of preventable height loss is, in fact, preventable.
His recommendations for protecting spinal health:
- Get enough calcium and vitamin D to support bone density
- Do regular weight-bearing exercise such as walking, stair climbing, and dancing
- Add strength and balance training to support posture and reduce fall risk
- Get screened and treated for osteoporosis when appropriate
"My advice is fairly simple: Keep moving!" Dr. Lee said.
He also offers some welcome relief on the posture front. "You do not have to maintain perfect posture every minute of the day," he said. Changing positions regularly and keeping the muscles that support your spine strong will do more over time than any single perfect sitting position.
