MOR Physicians Recognized at AAHKS Annual Meeting

November 9, 2020

Congratulations to Dr. Craig Della Valle, Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush (MOR) joint replacement surgeon; Professor, Department of Orthopedic Surgery; and Chief of Adult Reconstructive Surgery, Rush University Medical Center (RUMC), and Dr. Scott Sporer, MOR joint replacement surgeon and Professor, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, RUMC, on their recent ‘Best Poster Award’ at the 30th American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) annual meeting.  The poster, entitled ‘Randomized Trial of Static and Articulating Spacers for Treatment of Infected Total Hip Arthroscopy,’ won in the infection clinical category.

The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to compare perioperative and postoperative variables between static and articulating spacers for the treatment of chronic periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) complicating total hip arthroplasty (THA). The research demonstrated that the outcomes of static and articulating spacers are similar in the treatment of THA PJI undergoing two-stage exchange arthroplasty. The significantly longer length of hospital stay associated with the use of static spacers may have important economic implications for the health care system.
