Aggregation is the partnership of multiple physician groups under one group name and tax identification number but allowing each group to operate independently as its own separate division.

Aggregation differs from a merger, as practices join as a Division of a Group practice on equal footing, retaining division autonomy, decision-making, and care center culture will establish a collaborative centralized governance infrastructure. In a merger, one entity type is dominant, looking to have the other adopt its infrastructure. In both situations, two companies come together to benefit from combined resources, but under different premises.
