Elbow Tendon Injuries

What Are Elbow Tendon Injuries?

Tendons are strong, fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones, enabling joint movement and stability. Around the elbow, these tendons are essential for lifting, gripping, and extending the arm. Overuse, repetitive stress, or trauma can lead to painful and sometimes debilitating tendon injuries. Whether it’s a gradual condition like tennis elbow or an acute tear, such as a biceps or triceps tendon rupture, early diagnosis and expert care are key to recovery.

Common Elbow Tendon Conditions

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is one of the most common elbow tendon injuries. It involves inflammation or small tears in the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle (outside of the elbow). Despite its name, it affects not only tennis players but also individuals who perform repetitive wrist or arm motions—such as carpenters, painters, and office workers.

Symptoms:

  • Pain or burning on the outside of the elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain worsens with wrist extension or lifting

Biceps Tendon Tear or Tendinitis

The distal biceps tendon, located at the front of the elbow, can become inflamed from overuse (tendinitis) or may rupture entirely from a sudden injury, such as lifting a heavy object. A biceps tendon rupture is often accompanied by a “popping” sensation and a noticeable deformity in the upper arm.

Symptoms:

  • Sharp pain in the front of the elbow
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Weakness when rotating the forearm or lifting
  • A visible bulge (“Popeye” muscle) in the upper arm

Triceps Tendon Injury

Though less common, triceps tendon injuries can occur from direct trauma or overuse during activities like weightlifting or contact sports. A triceps tendon rupture affects the tendon that attaches the triceps muscle to the elbow, often resulting in pain and difficulty straightening the arm.

Symptoms:

  • Pain or tenderness at the back of the elbow
  • Difficulty extending the arm
  • Swelling or bruising
  • A gap near the olecranon (tip of the elbow) in complete ruptures

General Symptoms of Elbow Tendon Injuries

  • Localized elbow pain (front, back, or side)
  • Swelling or warmth around the joint
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Weakness in grip or arm function
  • A popping or tearing sensation at the time of injury

Common Causes of Elbow Tendon Injuries

  • Repetitive overhead or gripping activities
  • High-intensity weightlifting or resistance training
  • Poor athletic technique or improper ergonomics
  • Sudden trauma (common in tendon ruptures)
  • Age-related degeneration of tendon tissue

Diagnosing Elbow Tendon Conditions

Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment. Our specialists will perform a comprehensive evaluation that includes:

  • Detailed physical examination
  • Functional movement tests
  • Diagnostic imaging (X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI)
  • Discussion of activity history and symptom onset

Treatment Options for Elbow Tendon Injuries

Non-Surgical Treatments

  • Rest and activity modification to reduce strain
  • Physical therapy to restore strength and mobility
  • Bracing or taping for stabilization and support
  • Anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) for pain relief
  • Injections

Surgical Treatments

  • Tendon debridement to remove damaged tissue
  • Tendon repair or reattachment for ruptures (biceps/triceps)
  • Minimally invasive techniques to reduce downtime and improve outcomes
